Big question...

Q: Why did the format change from Episode 15?

A: There was a need to introduced additional interactivity and an audio magazine format (including where possible outside broadcast elements). Therefore, from Episode 15 onwards each show follows the following format:

1. Understanding Sikhism

2. History of the Sikhs

3. Shabad Translations

4. Resource Review - incorporating:

- Book of the month (readings / reviews / recommendations)

- Music Reviews/New Music (inc: the featuring of many up and coming artists)

5. Outside Coverage (if attended) - Bringing you recordings of events.

6. Inspirational thoughts, songs or phrases

With the new website the programme is also now effectively extended with a centralised Portal/blog site and assoicated tools, for example: Forums, links and online players.
You can hear all the previous shows online too.

Q: What about licencing rules for Podcasters?

Good question, it was only Aug/Sept'06 that both the Mechanical Copyright Protection Society (MCPS) and Performance Rights Society (PRS) worked hard to issue the shared Limited Podcasting Exploitation Licence - Known as LPEL. Sikhwithin have paid for this licence. In reality this means that if Sikhwithin features any song writers and performers their copyright and royalitieswill be protected. This is achieved by the terms of the licence. For example, reporting, monitoring and protecting any tracks from the possibiity of being ripped.

Q: How are the shows put together? In other words, what does it take to develop a Podcast?

With any quality production it is important to research, accredit, script and perform both pre and post production work.

Sikhwithin always quote resources used and also seek permission for communicating externally media/content.

In terms of items needed, these range from the software skills, computer hosting set-up and investment in good quality recording equipment and editing tools.

Although increasingly today more tools are available to develop podcasts it is important to focus accuracy, frequency and informative content. We hope to follow these aims with an underlying goal to use the content developed to help facilitate peace between all of humanity.

Welcome to Episode 14

Yes, we're back! After a short break (Six weeks, since 27/8/06)- The break was due to my thoughts on revamping the programme.

Interestingly, a few weeks back we were contacted by BBC World Radio as they wished to feature snippets of this programme as it is one of the few regular Sikh Podcasts available. The other regular one that I know of is the excellent audio provided by Mr G Singh at http://www.mrsikhnet.com (also available through itunes).

In addition, in the UK the BBC's The Heaven and Earth Show (a multi-faith TV programme) discussed with me the possibility of making a video documentary on the increase availability in religious podcasting content.

This week, before we launch the new episodes episode - we have a special interim episode dedicated to peace - a selection of inspiring tracks to help us save the world, the children and wish for peace for all.

An outside broadcast special
Yes, we're back and sorry for being a couple of days late. The editing of this week's episode took a little longer than I thought. Normally our show is structured into five parts: Meanings, Shabad translation, History, Story and Inspirational music. However, this week's show is a different - using interviews to convey knowledge.

Intro
We start this weeks show with a track that lasts only 47 seconds by Russell Watson. I've always considered the words and title of this track to be quite deep, i.e: Faith of the Heart. It is a track that I often play to give or raise inspiration.

Commemorating the 400th Anniversary of the Martyrdom of the Guru Arjan Dev Ji.
This weeks episode is a special outside broadcast recorded at Trafalgar Square, London (UK) at an event on 19th June 2006. It was organised by the Network of Sikh Organisations (chaired by Sir Dr Interjit Singh OBE) to commemorate the 400th Anniversary of the Martyrdom of the Guru Arjan Dev Ji.

The episode consists of interviews with an MP, Religious representatives, the Scouts brigade and some the Sevadars handing out water and cold drinks.

I thought that by using the concept of interviews this could provide a different way to communicate knowledge about the importance of this event.

Outro
One Shadbad has been included at the end of this week's show. It is just after we leave the Trafalgar Square recording. The Shabad is entitled: Satgur Hoe Dayaal. It was written by Guru Amar Das Ji. Snatam Kaur in London May 2006

With our new studio in place, (NB testing took place for much of the evening of Sunday 10th June), we hope to provide both an improvement in audio quality and an increase in frequency of episodes.

Studio Upgrade at Sikhwithin

One of the things we believe are essential in developing podcasts is the importance of quality.
Quality is applicable across many spheres:

- Reliability of sources
- Appropriate translations
- Appropriate use of language, for example, being respectiful and
- Quality of recordings.

With regard to the latter, we are now investing in better equipment (i.e, audio interfacing and powered microphones).

Developing a programme also requires effective scripting, linkages and opportunities for interacting.

Our studio upgrade will offer improvements in sound and the potential for portability. The latter I hope will increase the frequency / regularity of new shows.

Of course, when you are in receipt of the new podcasts, we'd love to get your feedback on what you think about them.

In addition, to the studio upgrade we are also working closely with Spirit Voyage on bringing you wonderful snippets.

Welcome to Episode 7
Over the weeks we have tried to post a new Episode of Sikhwithin every 2 weeks. This week we're a bit late on posting the latest episode. It is immediately available if you subscribe to this podcast through i-tunes.

For Episode 7 we have developed an outside broadcast special, keeping to the same format : Meanings, a translation, history/story and ending with Inspirational music.

This episode was recorded in Southall on 21st May. We travelled to different Gurdwaras. To give a visual insight, we have posted below some photographs from our evening tour. Also in this episode we are grateful for our audio support from Rohin Singh.

We visited Gurdwaras in Havlock Road, Park Avenue and Oswald Road.Each has its own interesting story.

Some of the early settlers of United Kingdom, in the late 1950s arrived in Southall, West London.

First Stop: Havlock Road Gurdwara
The first photograph shows the Havlock Road Gurdwara. It is one of the newest of Gurdwaras in West London (UK),costing I believe an estmated £17M. Its early foundation was a converted dairy back in the mid to late 1960s.

In the meanings section we talk about some of the important the themes of Sikhism for example, Equality of men and women and the importance of Human Rights. My thanks to Bhupinder Singh of http://www.sikhspirit.com. Back in 1999 during the Tricentenniel celebrations of the Khalsa they produced an excellent publication called Millennium Khalsa.

The second photograph shows us parked on the corner of one of the side road's off Havlock Road. It shows the wonderful Golden dome of the Gurdwara from a distance.

Second Stop: Park Avenue Gurdwara
We then proceeded to Park Avenue Gurdwara. I remember this Gurdwara building was originally a supermarket. It was set-up and enhanced while the Havlock Road Gurdwara was being built. It still remains as a Gurdwara today.

Our featured Shabad translation is from Snatam Kaur from her CD Shandi entitled: Hariaa (Strength). The full translation is shown below (see also sound issues!).

Tera Keeta Jaato nahee
Mai noo jog keetoee
Mai nirgunharay ko gun naahee aapai tara payoee

In English:
I cannot mearsure your grace.
You have made me worthy of you.
I am full of faults.

Nanak says I can survive on the Holy name only;
It rejuvenates (Naam is the nectar which makes man immortal and links him with God) my heart and soul.

Final Stop: Oswald Road Gurdwara
Our final stop was at Oswald Road Gurdwara. It is based in the most amazing location - in the centre of Southall - surrounded by houses behind one of Southall's hubs known as the Broadway.

It is at this Gurdwara we met a friend of mine - our special guest Jasprit Singh currently completing his MA in museum studies and working at the Victoria and Albert museum.

Jasprit Singh kindly helped with this weeks story - the origins of the Red Cross concept by a wonderful Sikh.

Although the podcast states that we couldn't get in. It was only at the time of recording. Afterwards someone kindly open the doors and we went inside.

The latter two photograph's show the inside of the Gurdwara at Oswald Road. As you can see there are some wonderful lighting and hanging displays.

Sound issues
With this show unfortunately we had some audio issues. Basically, our portable recorder's microphone synchronisation function appeared to be playing up (pardon the pun). The result was a frequent 'cutting short' of the ends or beginning of sentences. We apologise for this. To help, additional supportive text has been included on this posting. We hope to produce more outside broadcasts, hopefully with improved equipment et al.

We close with some inspirational music from Stevie Wonder - A time to Love from the CD A time to love - suggesting that we have lots of ism's like racism but we really need to make time to love.

Welcome to Episode 4

Its now looking like we have a couple of weeks between each episode. We'll try to make more time to get quality time in our studio.

This week we explore the history of the Sikhs at the time of Baba Banda Singh we also present the story of when a missionary from Rome came to visit India. At the time he met Guru Har Rai.

We also introduce a new section called meanings where we look explore general areas of Sikhism.

Each episode is now structured into 5 parts:

Part 1: Meanings - this week we are joined by Kavleen Kaur and together we explore the 5 K's.

Part 2: Comprised of a Shabad with translations - thanks to Kavleen we translate the Shabad Mel mere Pritma Jio sung by Dya Singh from the CD Pr'Desa-The Lonely Soul - Translated from a fantastic resource called Sikhi-to-the-max.

Part 3: We touch on a vital part of Sikh History - The story of Baba Banda Singh

Part 4: A Sikh Story - The story is called A visitor from Rome - when a missionary met Guru Har Rai. From the book In the Guru's Footsteps by G.S Sidhu, G.S Sivia and Kirpal Singh.

Welcome to Episode 3 of Sikhwithin.

Well, it looks like we're currently releasing shows at an average of one every 2 weeks or fornightly as we would say in the UK! The good news is that we now have some virtual tools that should be able to help us develop shows faster. However, I'm keen to not compromise both on quality and reliable sources - in the context of saying humbly that we hope that you enjoy the quality and content of each show.

This week we continue to explore the history of the Sikhs from the 5th to the 10th Guru and present the story of Guru Nanak's visit to Mecca showing us that God is everywhere. We also review the new CD by Balvinder Singh based in Australia and present more inspirational music.

The purpose of this podcast is to develop a 'bridge' in English to help us understand Sikhism and more about each other.

This week we continue to explore the history of the Sikhs to the 5th Guru and present a wonderful story entitled - The Scared Thread - teaching us that there is no value relying on worldly based materialistic items.

Guru Nanak has told us that a lasting thread for the soul can be made by practising in daily life the noble, lofty ideals of religion and morality. Let mercy be the cotton, contentment the thread, purity the knots and truth the needed twist. Blend these virtues together into your everyday life. Thereby your soul will be be invested with a truly sacred thread. That thread will never get dirty, burnt, or lost and will never break but accompany your soul.

We've now recorded the first episode.
This posting summarises what we have covered in our first show (episode 1) and how to get it.

Establishing the Podcast 'out there'!
It is amazing that there are now many podcast directory sites. Consider them as the Yahoo/Google equivalent of a list of available podcasts. We have now started to register the one that we have just recorded. To actually get on a listing/site, the podcast directory owners have to authenticate our podcast. We have both registered and been accepted by i-tunes so that you can pick up our podcast directly from the search key within the podcast option provided.

By simply click your mouse on the green boxed arrow in the title part of this posting's header you can hear the podcast online - this is a good alternative for those of you that do not have a personal mp3 player, for example an i-pod. Introducing the team behind the Sikhwithin Podcast

The sikhwithin podcast is developed by 3 contributers, Dr Savinder Singh, Rohin Singh and Kavleen Kaur. Savinder Singh is our main presenter of our podcast channel. He will be introducing the main content of the show: shabads, stories and translations.

Rohin actually came up with the name: Sikhwithin. He will be at the decks and mixing and playing the Sikh shabads, stories, translations and simran. Rohin will also narrate some sections of the show. Rohin is also working on his own unique simran tracks featuring instruments such as guitar, piano and tabla.

Kavleen Kaur can read and write Punjabi and is currently learning to read Gurmaki. She will also read out translations in English. She will also be presenting the show with Dr Savinder Singh.

As shows progress we hope to have guests come into our studio to share their thoughts.

Only a few days to go before our launch show enters cyberspace !

Preparation is key! Therefore, effort has to go into planning each episode.

We have already developed another podcast channel called Smooth Groovers. It is available both online and through i-tunes. (see http://smoothgroovers.blogspot.com and many online podcast stream sites, for example: podcast and podfeed). One could say that Smoothgroovers was a trial to learning about how to produce professional (we hope) output or content. The lessons learnt included: audio mixing skills, script preparation and ensuring reliable technical processes.

Here's hoping that people will listen, contribute and enjoy !
